Borno Emirate

The Borno Emirate, or Borno Sultanate, is a traditional Nigerian state that was formed at the start of the 20th century. It is headed by the descendants of the rulers of the Bornu Empire, founded before 1000. Maiduguri is the capital city of Borno State in North-Eastern Nigeria occupied mostly by a tribe call Kanuri and many other minor tribes. YERWA is another name referring to MAIDUGURI but mostly by the locals

His Royal Highness Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi Shehu Of Borno (born 13 May 1957) is the Shehu, or traditional ruler, of the Borno Emirate in northeast Nigeria. Shehu Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi (son of Shehu Umar Ibn Abubakar Garbai of Borno) has been the Shehu of Borno since 2009. He was born in Damagum, Yobe State on 13 May 1957. He became Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Finance (1993), Works and Housing and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (2008)

Borno state is pluralistic in ethnic composition with rich but diverse historical and cultural heritage that dates back to over one thousand (1000) years. It borders the Republics of Cameroun, Chad and Niger making it a major trading hub of goods. It also borders the Nigerian States of Yobe, Adamawa, and Gombe.

The Durbar and festivals in borno reflects the state’s cultural and historical dignity. It is a significant royal display of horsemanship mainly organized to mark important occasions and Sallah festivities The Durbar is characterized by royal horsemen, dances and gorgeous horses, trumpeters led by the Shehu, Emirs,District heads and other traditional title holders as the case may be. Other remarkable festivals which attract tourists from far and near are gaorgaram fishing, barakau annual festival , DDA, MDA and the Menwara Festivals. The DERA people of Shani Emirate celebrate the Menwara festival and it offers an opportunity for the Emir of Shani to consult with his people on matters of peace, security,unity and progress. The Menwara also serves as a period for initiation of age groups and appreciation of the year’s harvest. It also marks the beginning of the New year.
